How to Tell If Your Child Has an Ear Infection
Younger kids can't always tell you what hurts. Common signs include:
- Tugging or pulling at one or both ears
- Crying more than usual, especially when lying down
- Trouble sleeping
- Fever
- Drainage from the ear
- Difficulty hearing or responding to soft sounds
- Loss of appetite or balance issues
A child can have an ear infection without all of these. If you feel something's wrong, that's a reasonable enough reason to come in.
What We Do at Your Visit
A pediatric provider will examine your child's ears with an otoscope, identify whether there's an infection, determine whether it's bacterial or viral, and recommend a treatment plan.
If antibiotics are needed, we'll send the prescription to your pharmacy. If a watch-and-wait approach is appropriate (some ear infections clear on their own), we'll explain why and what to monitor. If your child has stuck-on earwax that's making it hard to evaluate, we can do an ear washing on-site.

Do ear infections need antibiotics?
Not always. Some clear on their own with time and pain management. Our providers will assess your child and recommend a treatment plan based on what they actually have — bacterial infections may need antibiotics, viral ones usually don't.
Can my child still go to school or daycare?
That depends on their symptoms. We'll give you a clear answer at the visit based on their fever, energy level, and contagion risk. We can provide a note of absence if needed.
How quickly will my child feel better?
Most ear infection pain starts improving within 24–48 hours of starting treatment. Severe pain that isn't improving or new symptoms should be a reason to follow up.
