When a Fever Needs After-Hours Care
Most childhood fevers can be managed at home with fluids, rest, and the right dose of fever reducer. We tend to see kids when:
- Fever is over 100.3°F in an infant younger than 2 months (this should be evaluated promptly)
- Fever is climbing or won't break with medication
- Fever comes with a stiff neck, severe headache, or rash
- Fever is paired with breathing trouble, severe vomiting, or signs of dehydration
- Your child seems unusually tired, confused, or unlike themselves
- It's been more than 24 hours and the fever isn't improving

What We Do During a Fever or Flu Visit
A focused exam, rapid testing where it changes the plan (flu, strep, RSV, COVID), and on-site treatment for what's treatable. If your child needs a prescription, we'll send it to your pharmacy of choice. If they need a breathing treatment, we can do that here. If they need ER-level care, we will refer you.
What to Bring
- Your child's insurance card
- Note of when the fever started and the highest reading you've seen
- List of any medication you've already given (and the time of last dose)
- The name of your child's regular pediatrician (if established)
Frequently Asked Questions
At what fever should I bring my child to Purpose Pediatrics?
For infants under 2 months, any fever of 100.3°F or higher should be evaluated promptly. For older children, bring them in if the fever is climbing, won't respond to medication, has lasted three or more days, or comes with worrying symptoms like stiff neck, severe headache, breathing trouble, or signs of dehydration.
Do you do rapid flu testing?
Yes. We have rapid flu, RSV, COVID, and strep tests available on-site with results during your visit.
Is this faster than the ER?
For non-emergency pediatric illness, yes. We're built specifically for kids with acute illness — most visits take under an hour.
Can you treat the flu, or only diagnose it?
Both. We'll evaluate, test if it changes the plan, and prescribe antivirals or supportive treatment as appropriate.
