Strep Testing
Purpose Pediatrics offers rapid strep testing for children in Beaumont, TX during evening and weekend hours. Call or walk in. We'll swab and test. If it's positive, we start antibiotics same-visit and send the prescription to your pharmacy of choice.
When to Get a Strep Test
Common signs your child may need a strep test include:
- Sudden sore throat (especially without much cough or runny nose)
- Fever
- Painful swallowing
- Swollen, tender glands in the neck
- White patches or red spots on the tonsils or back of the throat
- Stomach pain (more common in younger children)
- Loss of appetite
Strep is treatable, but it needs to be diagnosed correctly. A positive test means antibiotics; a negative one means we're treating something different.
What We Do at Your Visit
A pediatric provider does a focused throat exam, takes a quick throat swab, and runs the rapid strep test on-site. Results come back in minutes. If positive, we'll prescribe an appropriate antibiotic and send it to your pharmacy. If negative, we'll evaluate other possible causes for the sore throat and treat accordingly.
What to Bring
- Your child's insurance card
- A timeline of when the sore throat started
- A list of close contacts who've recently been sick (especially anyone diagnosed with strep)
- The name of your child's regular pediatrician (if established)

How fast are strep test results?
Rapid strep tests return results within 5-10 minutes during your visit.
If my child tests positive, can you prescribe antibiotics during the same visit?
Yes. We'll prescribe an appropriate antibiotic and send it directly to your pharmacy.
My child has had strep before — can you just call in antibiotics without a test?
No. Antibiotics should be prescribed based on a confirmed diagnosis. A test is fast and accurate.
How much is a strep test?
For self-pay patients, the rapid strep test is $30, in addition to the standard sick visit fee. We also bill insurance.
